Mexico’s violence creeps close |

PRESIDIO, OJINAGA, Chih. – A body found on Sunday drifting slowly in the Rio Grande may be related to six murdered men found under bridges last week along a highway south of Ojinaga, Chihuahua.
A walker on the Texas side spotted the body near the point that Alamito Creek empties into the river, just downriver from Presidio, said Sheriff Danny Dominguez. That person called the Border Patrol, which in turn contacted the sheriff’s office.
“The body’s not been identified,” said Dominguez. “He was shot in the head, execution style, and his hands were handcuffed behind him. He could’ve been killed in Mexico, dumped in the river, and floated down.”

City cuts chamber’s funding |

MARFA – The citizen comment period at last Thursday’s Marfa City Council meeting was dominated by one topic: the recent decision to cut funding for the Marfa Chamber of Commerce.
Public concern and confusion surrounding the chamber’s future began Monday evening after a budget workshop at which Mayor Dan Dunlap proposed his new city budget for fiscal year 2010-2011. |

Voters to decide school tax rate |

MARFA – Voters will go to the polls November 20 to decide on a proposed 12-cent tax increase for Marfa ISD.
School board trustees on Monday approved a rate of $1.52 per $100 valuation, up from the current fiscal year’s $1.40 rate. The new, proposed rate is higher than the rollback rate, which triggers the election.
“The economy is difficult,” district Financial Director Victoria Sanchez acknowledged in her presentation Monday. “But there are increases in the education costs of our students. Our students are our future. It’s a difficult situation.” |

Fans nudge Food Shark into contest’s top 10 |

MARFA – The Food Shark, Marfa’s only shark that can park, has cracked the food truck top 10.
The Food Network is promoting and casting the second season of a frothy TV concoction called the Great Food Truck Race. Fans vote for their favorite food truck online and via text. Of the 271 food trucks that are in the running, the Food Shark is number eight, as of Wednesday. |

Lightning strike causes blackout in Marfa |

MARFA – Where were you when the lights went out?
Lightning struck the Oak Street substation about 7:30pm Monday and, poof, power went out all over town. An electrical storm rolled overhead and thunder grumbled menacingly.
“We have four transformers in the substation – one is a spare and three are active,” AEP Texas Distribution Supervisor Eddie Pallarez said the following day. “Lightning blew one transformer. We had to cut over to the spare and that’s what took so long.”

Music, parade and more at Marfa Lights Festival this weekend |
